I haven't had Billy in my arms to-day, and I don't know how I shall ever get myself to sleep if I let myself think about it. His sleep-place on my breast aches. It is a comfort to think that the great big God understands the women folk that He makes, even if they don't understand themselves. "So you're digging up the bachelor-buttons, Mrs. Molly?" the doctor asked as he leaned over the gate. I went on digging without looking up at him. I couldn't look up because I was blushing still worse. Sometimes I hate that man, and if he wasn't Billy's father I wouldn't be as friendly with him as I am. But somebody has to look after Billy. "Yes, and Mrs. Dallas knows more about it than is good for her.".

“Cowboy?” said Bob, at once interested by the two magic words “riding range.” He had met them in many books of adventure. They brought up thoughts of bucking bronchos, fights with Indians, and all the rest of the romance of the West. That this boy of about his own age could be a cowboy was really exciting. But he missed the woolly chaps and the sombrero. The boy was simply dressed in overalls, went barefooted and wore a heavy slouch hat.

There was a disconcerting silence, while Judith breathed hard and kept her eyes glued on Miss Green. "That was generous of him. But why?" "Well, of all things!" exclaimed Patricia indignantly. "We're locked out!" "She used to be," was Judith's frank reply. "But since you've become an artist, like Aunt Louise, she fairly adores you!".
